Tristar Group, the global integrated energy logistics company, is pleased to announce their second annual ‘Safety at Sea’ conference will be held virtually on December 09.

The webinar will focus on three pivotal issues for seafarers – mental health, legal support, and protection against piracy.

Speakers from oil major Shell and global law firm HFW will address almost 1,000 seafarers across the world, some on vessels at sea. After their presentations they will be joined by panellists from Kuwaiti Oil Tanker Company, Oman Shipping, Mission to Seafarers, Lloyds Register and Fleet Ship Management, who will also answer questions that the seafarers and shipping professionals may ask on the three subjects.

The inaugural ‘Safety at Sea’ conference openly discussed mental health issues faced by seafarers. It was held on November 10, 2019 in Dubai and was attended by more than 150 decision makers and senior officials from the shipping industry in person, and by over 500 seafarers based in India and the Philippines remotely via livestream.

Eugene Mayne, Founder and CEO of Tristar Group said: "Seafarers are the most important asset for the maritime industry. As the pandemic continues, seafarers find themselves away from home for longer periods of time, which leads to a myriad of issues that can impact their mental health. A 2019 study by Yale University and the ITF Seafarer’s Trust shows that 17% of seafarers reported anxiety and 20% reported suicidal intentions.

Longer periods at sea also expose seafarers to the risk of piracy, which is estimated to have an impact of seven to twelve billion dollars on the industry annually.  The ‘Safety at Sea’ conference will address this issue in detail in order to progress the global conversation on piracy and find solutions.

When there is a maritime incident, seafarers are often denied rights and means to defend themselves, which has an adverse impact on the individual health and well-being of seafarers who are largely victims of circumstances. The conference will discuss the issue and legal recourse options available to seafarers and companies alike."

Tristar has set up a 24/7 helpline in February this year for its crew members through UK-based Sailors Society as well as conducted a series of Psychological First Aid workshops in India from December 2019 to March 2020.

Recognising Tristar’s efforts, the Maritime Standard Awards 2020 recently named Tristar as the Corporate Social Responsibility winner while the Arabia CSR Awards 2020 chose the company as the Partnerships and Collaborations Category 1st runner-up.
