A\u00a0documentary video from the visit can be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/reAj92eIE5c\"><u>here<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>What is the objective of The Ocean Cleanup? <\/b><\/strong><strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Ocean Cleanup is a global non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands. It develops and scales solutions to rid the oceans of plastic pollution by both stemming inflow via rivers and removing waste that has already accumulated.<\/p>\n<p>With the\u00a0global non-profit\u00a0already responsible for preventing over 60 million kilograms of trash from reaching the world\u2019s oceans, the\u00a030\u202fCities Program aims to scale its\u00a0Interceptor\u2122 solutions across key population centers in Asia and the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>The Ocean Cleanup\u00a0seeks to eliminate up to one third of all river-borne plastic flowing into the ocean by the end of the decade, contributing to an eventual 90\u202fpercent reduction in floating ocean plastic pollution worldwide\u00a0by 2040.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with both national government and city authorities in Panama City, The Ocean Cleanup and local non-profit partner Marea Verde, alongside local communities, are working towards the successful restoration of the seven major rivers flowing through Panama City as part of the \u2018Seven Basins\u2019 Project, stopping the flow of trash into the Bay of Panama using The Ocean Cleanup\u2019s proven Interceptor technology.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prevent more than 800,000 kilograms of waste from reaching the sea each year.<\/li>\n<li>Recover at least 100,000 kilograms of plastic annually.<\/li>\n<li>Contribute to a clean ecosystem for more than two million migratory birds.<\/li>\n<li>Restore more than 30 km of coastline.<\/li>\n<li>Improve quality of life in communities along the intervened rivers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What has been achieved in Panama City? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/cep\/projects\/circular-cities-beyond-clastics-project\/panama\/panama-city\"><u>United Nations Environment Program<\/u><\/a>, Panama City generates over 41,000 tons of plastic waste each year. Located on the country\u2019s Pacific coast, the already severe societal and ecological impact of plastic waste pollution is amplified by the area\u2019s rich biodiversity and critical ecosystems, including mangroves.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a strategic alliance with <a href=\"https:\/\/mareaverdepanama.org\/en\/home\/\"><u>Marea Verde<\/u><\/a>, the installation of The Ocean Cleanup\u2019s\u00a0Interceptor 022 on the R\u00edo Abajo and Interceptor 025 on the R\u00edo Mat\u00edas Hern\u00e1ndez are now delivering measurable, city-wide results in plastic waste reduction.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to initiatives planned for\u00a0a further five regional waterways, and the implementation of environmental education programs to reduce the creation of plastic waste at source, it is hoped that the project\u2019s impact will continue to scale exponentially.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What has been said about the occasion?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Steve Lee, President of Kia Central & South America regional headquarters, said: \u201cKia\u2019s partnership with The Ocean Cleanup demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship. By combining innovative technology with on-the-ground knowledge, we\u2019re not just stopping plastic at its source\u2014we\u2019re creating a blueprint for cleaner, healthier cities and oceans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Kia\u2019s connection to The Ocean Cleanup<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Kia Corporation and The Ocean Cleanup are in the midst of a long-term partnership that began in 2022 and will continue until 2031.
