G42, the United Arab Emirates\u2019 leading artificial intelligence company, expects the first shipments of some of the world\u2019s most advanced chips to arrive in the country within months, bolstering its efforts to become a major player in the technology.<\/p>\n

The deliveries will include chips from\u00a0Nvidia Corp.,\u00a0Advanced Micro Devices Inc.\u00a0and US startup\u00a0Cerebras Systems Inc., Chief Executive Officer\u00a0Peng Xiao\u00a0said in an interview with Bloomberg TV in Davos.<\/p>\n

The Middle East has become a magnet for tech groups such as ChatGPT-maker\u00a0OpenAI\u00a0and\u00a0Microsoft Corp., drawn by deep pools of capital and relatively cheap energy for computing.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0November, the US approved the sale of tens of thousands of advanced AI chips to G42 and Saudi Arabia\u2019s Humain, despite political concerns that the technology could ultimately make its way to China. Weeks later, the UAE<\/a> signed the\u00a0Pax Silica\u00a0pact with the US, committing to closer cooperation on technology supply chains.<\/p>\n

The first 200 megawatts of capacity from a major data-centre build-out in Abu Dhabi is set to come online \u201cin the next couple of months\u201d, Xiao said.<\/p>\n

G42 plans to add between 200MW and 500MW of capacity each quarter, eventually expanding the site to as much as 5 gigawatts over the coming years. The project is part of an overseas expansion of OpenAI\u2019s\u00a0Stargate initiative, to develop large-scale AI infrastructure outside the US.<\/p>\n

Concerns that the global rush to build data centers could lead to overcapacity are misplaced, Xiao said, particularly when it comes the computing required to run AI models for users. \u201cThe supply will struggle to keep up with the demand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

G42, chaired by the UAE\u2019s national security adviser\u00a0Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, plays a central role in the country\u2019s push to become a global AI player. It struck a\u00a0$1.5 billion partnership\u00a0with Microsoft and, alongside sovereign wealth fund\u00a0Mubadala Investment Co., is a founding partner of MGX, an AI-focused investment vehicle.<\/p>\n

The UAE\u2019s AI ambitions come as regional peers like Saudi Arabia and\u00a0Qatar also ramp up\u00a0investments. Xiao downplayed talk of rivalry, calling the broader regional push a reflection of global demand.<\/p>\n

Still, speaking at Davos, the Qatar Investment Authority\u2019s CEO said the fund would take a\u00a0more selective approach\u00a0to AI this year. Meanwhile, Mubadala\u2019s chief said the fund had \u201ca lot of conviction\u201d in the sector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
