Amidst the triple environmental threat of biodiversity loss, climate disruption and escalating pollution, Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres launched \u201can unprecedented effort to heal the Earth\u201d, on the eve of World Environment Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kicking off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, he said the planet was rapidly reaching a \u201cpoint of no return\u201d, cutting down forests, polluting rivers and oceans, and ploughing grasslands \u201cinto oblivion\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are ravaging the very ecosystems that underpin our societies,\u201d the UN chief warned in his message for the Day, being marked on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our degradation of the natural world is destroying the very food, water and resources needed to survive, and already undermining the well-being of 3.2 billion people \u2013 or 40 per cent of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But fortunately, the Earth is resilient and \u201cwe still have time to reverse the damage we have done,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By restoring ecosystems, he said that \u201cwe can drive a transformation that will contribute to the achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAccomplishing these things will not only safeguard the planet\u2019s resources. It will create millions of new jobs by 2030, generate returns of over $7 trillion dollars every year and help eliminate poverty and hunger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UN chief described the decade of restoration as \u201ca global call to action\u201d that will draw together \u201cpolitical support, scientific research and financial muscle to massively scale up restoration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He pointed out that the next 10 years are \u201cour final chance to avert a climate catastrophe, turn back the deadly tide of pollution and end species loss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
