Seventy-two percent of\u00a0data and analytics<\/a>\u00a0(D&A) leaders with digital initiatives are either leading or heavily involved in their organization\u2019s digital transformation initiatives,\u00a0according to Gartner, Inc.\u2019s sixth annual Chief Data Officer (CDO) survey*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe results indicate that more organizations\u00a0now understand the synergy between building a\u00a0data-driven business<\/a>\u00a0and leading digital transformation,\u201d said\u00a0Debra Logan<\/a>, distinguished research vice president at Gartner. \u201cD&A strategy is a business strategy infused with D&A thinking; it has a primary role in digital business strategy, affecting everything the organization does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gartner analysts presented these findings during the\u00a0Gartner Data & Analytics Summit 2021<\/a>, which is taking place virtually in the Americas through Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While only 24% of respondents said they are leading digital transformation efforts, the boundaries between\u00a0CDOs and chief digital officers<\/a>\u00a0are becoming more and more blurred. CDOs are increasingly being asked to take on more strategic objectives and lead digital transformation initiatives as digital business itself transforms to business as usual (see Figure 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prioritize Business-Facing KPIs to Enhance Influence and Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While data quality (51%), ROI from D&A investments (44%) and\u00a0data sharing<\/a>\u00a0(43%) are D&A leaders\u2019 top objectives,\u00a0their role will not be seen as valuable unless they focus on stakeholders\u2019 KPIs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not enough to manage data and create insights,\u201d said Ms. Logan. \u201cThese activities must deliver measurable business outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cData sharing is the way to optimize higher quality data and more robust data and analytics to solve business challenges and goals,\u201d said Ms. Logan. \u201cData sharing is an important KPI and a business necessity. It accelerates digital business transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gartner predicts that by 2023, organizations that promote data sharing will outperform their peers on most business value metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Successful CDOs Translate Data Into Business Results<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CDOs who have business-facing KPIs and multiple business partners are 1.7 times more likely to be effective at consistently producing clear business value by successfully demonstrating ROI from the D&A investments. They are also 2.3 times more likely to be effective at reducing time to market and 3.5 times more likely to be effective at data monetization.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less successful CDOs are those who failed to show a link between D&A and business value and who are inclined to focus on technology instead of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, 93% of CDOs reported that effective communication is critical to the success of their roles. Overall, the most important competencies for D&A leaders are\u00a0influencing, engagement and effective communication plans. These are leadership \u2013 not management \u2013 skills. \u201cIf the CDO does not exert influence across the organization by promoting data sharing, engaging stakeholders and training the workforce to\u00a0become data literate<\/a>, they will likely not perform well in their role,\u201d said Ms. Logan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
